Malayalam as a Compulsory subject.

Malayalam is made as a compulsory subject in all the schools from classes 1-10 by the state government. The state government has made compulsory that all the schools including CBSE, ICSE, other central syllabus schools, linguistic minority schools, and oriental schools should make Malayalam a mandatory subject in their curriculum. If arrangements are not made for teaching Malayalam the headmaster of the school will be charged a penalty of Rs 5000 which will be deducted from their salary. If unaided schools do not teach Malayalam accreditation of the school will be canceled on the third time on violation of the law. The action will be taken after issuing a notice to the headmaster and management. A scholarship will be granted to class 10 students of the schools which encourage  Malayalam language learning for the next two years to study Malayalam. Five percent Malayalam students of every school will be granted scholarship.

When children learn their mother tongue they are simultaneously fostering a whole host of essential skills such as critical thinking and literacy skills. A stronger mother tongue foundation equips children with the skills they need for learning additional languages. Since Malayam is our mother tongue and opted as a medium of communication in our state children with a strong foundation for Malayalam will have a deeper understanding of themselves and their place within society along with an increased sense of well being and confidence.
